Devil's Gorge was named for a infamous rock formation just a few miles from town located on the fork of the Yukon River. It was founded in 1898 when gold was found on the shore of an artificial lake formed behind a damn nearby. The town was founded at the heigh of the Klondike Gold Rush, and within the first year the population grew exponentially to almost 7,000.
